“Yee-ouch,” I say, trying to walk around the room without limping. I slide off my beige espadrilles and look at my heels, which are covered in angry, bubbled blisters.
“At least you outran the goat,” Gabe says. “I’m sure socks would have slowed you down. I’d take blisters over a goat bite to the ass any day.” He’s been trying hard to keep the mood light and breezy since yesterday’s lobby meltdown, and while I’m still feeling its effects, I’m grateful for the reason to laugh.
“Very funny,” I say.
“I’ll be here all day.” He takes a deep bow.
“Good to know.” I smile and then grab my backpack out of the closet. “Do you think I can wear flip-flops to the class? The note said closed-toe shoes.” I dig around through the pack for the rubber sandals I know are in there somewhere. “Where the hell are they?” I sigh with frustration, but then my fingers find the sandals buried deep at the bottom of the pack.
Gabe waves a hand like he’s trying to get rid of a pesky fly. “Forget the note. That’s for clumsy people who don’t know how to work a ladle. You, my love, are not that person.”
“Maybe so, but it’s right here,” I say, reading the paper the concierge had given me. I point at the last paragraph. “‘Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Aprons and all supplies will be provided. Bring your appetite!’”
“Well, if a lame rule is more important than your comfort, go right ahead and wear the shoes.”
I slide into the black flip-flops and sigh, this time with contentment. “Oh, so much better.” I take a few quick strides. “Screw it, I’m wearing these. At least my dress is long so you won’t really see them.”
“Good call,” Gabe says. “Comfortable and fashion-aware.” I roll my eyes. “Now go forth and learn to cook all the things. That’s why we’re here, after all.”
A lump forms in my throat. “That’s not the only reason,” I say, then wonder why I always do that. Force us back there, instead of looking forward. For whatever reason, as illogical as it is, I’m afraid to stop focusing on the accident. On all that was lost.
“I know, Tegan. But let’s not think about all that right now, okay?”
I nod, putting one arm through the strap of my small leather purse so it lies across my chest. I adjust the yellow-and-white herringbone striped sundress that hangs to the floor so it’s not bunched up, and tie a pashmina scarf around the purse strap. “See you soon?” I ask as I grab the key card off the table by the door along with three sealed-and-stamped envelopes—one for my parents, one for Gabe’s parents and one for Anna—and slip everything into my purse. “I think it’s over around four.”
“You bet,” Gabe says. “See you when you’re back.”
